The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain are many things, including  a collective of sports clubs for children and young people. Many are based on a specific sport and all are encouraged to participate in many and varied alternative activities which benefit their local communities in general and disadvantaged children, young people and families in particular.

The inclusion of any club is dependant on it accepting our ‘objects’ and the presence of a serving or retired Police Officer or member of the Home Office on their respective committees. The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain is also an organisation that supports youth and community groups throughout Great Britain in initiatives which enhance young people's life skills and promote social inclusion by helping them to make the most of their potential and become responsible citizens.

There is no shortage of ideas, drive and enthusiasm to develop initiatives. Accessing the funds and resources to turn those initiatives into tangible activities, can be a difficult and frustrating task, especially for young people who are anxious to see their hopes and plans come to fruition.

The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain provides a new means of supporting young people. As with the various Police Community Clubs spread throughout the country, the projects supported by the PCCGB must be supported by local police officers and be aligned to local crime and disorder strategies. These set local priorities and plans for partnerships working to tackle crime.

Our Aims
The committee that oversees the business of the PCCGB are all serving or retired police officers and, like so many others, work daily with young people and youth work professionals who display a vast amount of energy and innovation for developing initiatives which meet the needs of children and young people. With regard to youth and community projects, the PCCGB concentrate on three themes:

Education
Through the provision of booklets, all based on a theme surrounding our exclusive characters ‘Barney and Echo’ we seek to educate children and their carers on numerous subjects relating to the promotion of life skills, increasing self-esteem and the development of motivation in young people.

The booklet contains key points surrounding bullying and vandalism and addresses a difficult and sensitive subject area which has formed part of the schools curriculum.

We also have just released our latest characters 'The Dims Witts' which deal with the very serious issue of lethal weapons being held by young children today.  These books are aimed at both Key Stage 1 & 2.

Citizenship
We support projects, which seek to develop children and young people into good and active citizens who can make a positive contribution to their communities. These will include, activities to tackle social exclusion, truancy, bullying, working with excluded pupils and many other community-based initiatives.

Sport and Leisure
Through our established clubs we support projects that seek to provide a stable environment for children and young people and which promote moral values. Examples will include initiatives, which open up sporting activities for our own and other community sports clubs, which target particularly vulnerable or disadvantaged children

The potential benefit of the work carried out by this organisation is huge. It has a national network of ‘volunteer’ professionals to support the development and delivery of projects and a unique means of tapping into the ideas of children and young people. The concept is innovative, focused and at the forefront of current thinking on working with young people, tackling social exclusion and building sustainable communities.
